How do I free up space on Realme?

Running out of storage space on your Realme phone can be frustrating, especially if you take lots of photos and videos, download apps and games, and store other files. Thankfully, there are many ways to free up space on Realme devices to make room for more apps, media, and documents.

Check Your Storage Usage

First, it’s helpful to understand where your storage space is being used. Go to Settings > Storage to view details about app data, cached data, photos, videos, audio, and documents stored on your phone.

This will show you which apps, file types, and data are taking up the most room so you can better focus your cleanup efforts.

Clear App Cache

Temporary app files like cache and data can build up over time and consume GBs of space. For each app in Storage settings, tap ‘Clear Cache’ to delete these temporary files.

This frees up space without deleting anything important. Your apps will simply re-download cache as needed.

Uninstall Unused Apps

Do you have apps you never or rarely use? Uninstall them to get back the storage space they are occupying. Here’s how:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps.
  2. Tap the app you want to uninstall.
  3. Tap Uninstall and confirm.

Stick to removing apps you know you won’t need in the future to avoid having to re-download them.

Remove Photos and Videos

Your camera roll may be consuming more space than anything else on your phone. Delete photos and videos you no longer need:

  • Open Gallery app.
  • Tap and hold a photo or video to select it.
  • Tap other items to select multiple files.
  • Tap the Delete icon.

Consider backing up photos to the cloud and then deleting local copies to save space.

Clear Large Files

Large files like music, videos, and documents can quickly fill up storage. To see which files are taking up the most room, go to File Manager > Internal Storage. Sort files by size to easily identify space hogs.

Delete or move large files you no longer need to free up storage capacity. You can transfer files to a computer or external storage device.

Manage Chat Attachments

Chat apps like WhatsApp can accumulate space from shared photos, videos, and other attachments over time. Here are two ways to manage chat attachments:

  1. Open chats and delete attachments you no longer need.
  2. Grant WhatsApp permission to delete media older than a specified duration (Settings > Data Usage > Media Auto Download).

Delete Downloads

Any files you have downloaded via browser or apps remain stored on your phone. Periodically delete old downloads you have already extracted or used to stop them from consuming space.

You can find downloads in the ‘Downloads’ app or in File Manager under Internal Storage > Downloads.

Remove Temporary Files

Your Realme device can build up various temporary files from apps, the OS, and other processes. To safely clear these, go to Settings > Storage > Cache Data > Clear Cache.

Delete Google Play Movies & TV Cache

If you stream movies and shows from Google Play Movies & TV, its cache data can take up significant storage over time. To clear it:

  1. Open the Play Movies & TV app.
  2. Tap your profile icon.
  3. Go to Settings > Clear local search history.

Uninstall Carrier Bloatware

Pre-installed apps from carriers are convenient but can consume space if unused. Consider uninstalling carrier bloatware you never use.

Be careful not to remove any apps required for cellular service or other functionality.

Factory Reset as Last Resort

If you still need more room after trying the steps above, consider a factory reset to completely wipe your device and start fresh. Backup important data first, as this will erase everything.

To factory reset, go to Settings > Additional settings > Backup & reset > Factory data reset. Tap Reset phone and confirm.

Set Up Cloud Storage

To avoid future space issues, set up cloud storage and adjust settings to store files in the cloud rather than locally. Options include:

  • Google Photos – Automatically backs up photos and videos.
  • Google Drive – Offers 15GB free storage for any type of file.
  • Microsoft OneDrive – Provides 5GB free storage.

Using cloud storage means fewer files stored locally, resulting in more available space on your Realme device.

Enable Storage Manager

Realme devices have a built-in storage manager that can automatically free up space as needed. To enable:

  1. Go to Settings > Additional Settings > Storage Manager.
  2. Turn on ‘Auto-delete old photos and videos’ and ‘Auto-delete duplicate photos’.
  3. Set the time period for deleting photos and videos to free up space.

Set App Data Limit

To prevent apps from consuming too much storage, set a data limit for large apps like games and media apps:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps.
  2. Select the app.
  3. Tap Storage > Enable Data Limit and set the desired limit.

Clear Chrome Cache and Data

Google Chrome can build up significant cached data and files over time. To clear:

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu > Settings > Privacy > Clear browsing data.
  3. Choose time range to delete and select cached images/files.
  4. Tap Clear data.

Enable Chrome Tab Limit

Lots of open Chrome tabs can consume RAM and storage. Enable a tab limit:

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu > Settings > Tabs.
  3. Toggle ‘Tab limit’ on and set desired max tabs allowed.

Clear Images in Messages

Text message attachments can quickly eat up space. To remove them:

  1. Open Messages app > Tap conversation.
  2. Tap and hold any image, then Delete.
  3. Repeat to delete all unneeded images.

Enable Storage Saver in Facebook

The Facebook app lets you limit video and photo quality to save space:

  1. Open Facebook app > Tap the hamburger menu.
  2. Go to Settings & Privacy > Data Usage > Storage Saver.
  3. Enable Storage Saver.

Reduce Spotify Cache

Follow these steps to reduce the storage space used by Spotify:

  1. Open Spotify.
  2. Tap Home > Settings > Storage.
  3. Choose a lower limit for ‘Cache size’.

Enable Instagram Data Saver

Instagram’s ‘Data Saver’ limits video quality to conserve space:

  1. Open Instagram > Profile tab.
  2. Tap the three-line menu > Settings > Account > Data Usage.
  3. Enable ‘Data Saver’.

Offload Unused Apps

Offloading removes the app while keeping documents and data. To offload unused apps:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps.
  2. Tap the app and select Storage.
  3. Choose ‘Offload app’ to remove the program while retaining data.

Delete Device Backups

Backups of your device settings and data can consume GBs of storage. Old backups can be deleted if new ones exist:

  1. Go to Settings > Additional settings > Backup & reset.
  2. Tap Delete backup data.
  3. Select unneeded backups and tap DELETE.

Conclusion

With a mix of clearing cached and temporary files, removing unneeded apps, moving data to the cloud, and adjusting app settings, you can effectively free up storage space on your Realme device.

Aim to keep at least 10-20% of your total storage free at all times to ensure optimal performance. And routinely clean up clutter to continuously free up more capacity.

Using smart storage management behaviors will resolve most storage limitations on your Realme phone or tablet.
