Why is my WhatsApp showing disappearing messages?

If you are noticing disappearing messages on WhatsApp, there are a few potential reasons why this may be happening. Disappearing messages, also known as disappearing chats, are an optional feature in WhatsApp that allows users to send messages that will automatically disappear after a set amount of time. Here are some of the most common reasons why you may be seeing disappearing messages in your WhatsApp chats.

You or your contact turned on disappearing messages

The most likely reason that messages are disappearing in a chat is that either you or the contact you are chatting with has enabled disappearing messages. This feature can be turned on for individual chats or all new chats by default.

To check if disappearing messages are enabled for a specific chat on Android:

  • Open the individual chat
  • Tap the contact’s name at the top
  • Tap Disappearing messages

On iPhone:

  • Open the individual chat
  • Tap the contact’s name at the top
  • Scroll down and tap Disappearing Messages

If the toggle is enabled here for either ‘Default message timer’ or a custom duration, it means disappearing messages are turned on for that chat.

To check your default disappearing message setting for new chats:

  • Go to WhatsApp Settings
  • Tap Account > Privacy > Default message timer

If this is set to anything other than Off, new chats will automatically have disappearing messages enabled.

The messages expired

Another possibility is that disappearing messages were enabled, but have since reached their expiration time and automatically disappeared. The default time is 24 hours, but can be customized to be as little as 5 seconds.

So if disappearing messages were turned on, even if they are now turned back off, any messages sent previously will still disappear after the set duration. This is normal behavior when the feature is enabled.

It’s a bug

In some cases, there may simply be a bug causing messages to disappear even when disappearing messages are not enabled. This has happened for some users after updating WhatsApp.

Some troubleshooting steps if you think it’s a bug are:

  • Force close and restart the WhatsApp app
  • Update WhatsApp to the latest version
  • Try turning disappearing messages on and off
  • Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp

If none of those help, report the issue directly to WhatsApp.

Media files disappeared

Keep in mind that even if disappearing messages are disabled, WhatsApp has a separate setting that automatically deletes media from your phone after a certain amount of time. So if only media like photos or videos are disappearing, this is likely why.

To find this setting:

  • Go to WhatsApp Settings > Data and Storage Usage
  • Tap Media auto download
  • Tap the dropdown next to When using mobile data and check the Keep media setting.

This will allow you to customize how long media is kept before being deleted.

How to disable disappearing messages

If you are seeing disappearing messages when you do not want them, here is how to disable the feature entirely:

  • For an individual chat: Open the chat, tap the contact’s name, tap Disappearing messages and select Off.
  • For new chats by default: Go to WhatsApp Settings > Account > Privacy > Default message timer and select Off.

This will stop messages from disappearing in all current and new chats. Keep in mind previous messages may still disappear if they had a timer enabled.

Retrieve disappeared messages

Unfortunately, there is no native way to retrieve messages that have disappeared due to enabling disappearing messages. The purpose of the feature is privacy, so once they are gone, they are gone for good.

However, if you have a third-party backup solution or the chat was recently backed up to Google Drive or iCloud, you may be able to restore older messages by restoring from a backup.

Some Android apps claim to be able to retrieve disappeared messages, but effectiveness varies and it usually will not work if too much time has passed. To be safe, do not rely on being able to recover disappeared messages.

Prevent future messages from disappearing

To make sure you do not lose important messages going forward due to disappearing message timers:

  • Turn off disappearing messages for all chats.
  • Double check that they are disabled for all new chats as well.
  • Frequently back up your chats to cloud storage like Google Drive or iCloud.
  • Use a third party backup tool to create local backups.
  • Screenshot or copy important messages you want to keep before the timer expires.
  • Disable auto-delete of media files so your photos/videos remain.

Following those steps will help prevent losing anything important if you, your contacts, or a bug enables disappearing messages accidentally in the future.

Conclusion

Disappearing messages on WhatsApp can be confusing if you are not expecting them. But in most cases it is simply because the feature was enabled intentionally or messages have expired after their preset duration.

Check your settings to see if you or a contact turned on disappearing messages for a particular chat or for new chats by default. If it seems to be a bug, try troubleshooting steps like updating WhatsApp or uninstalling and reinstalling the app.

And if you want to prevent disappearing messages going forward, disable the feature for all chats and make sure you have backups of important conversations.

With the right settings and backups, you can use WhatsApp without worrying about losing your message history.
